A view into the valley from Cumberland Nature Reserve onto one of the river sections paddled in the Table Mountain Descent. On the 16th of December 2009 the Table Mountain Descent will take place from Cumberland Nature Reserve to Nagle Dam for only the second time. KNCU has traditionally used the Day of Reconciliation to host a canoe race, but it was only in 2008 that a carefully planned release of water from Albert Falls Dam allowed canoeists to enjoy some of the best river paddling in South Africa. Surprisingly few paddlers can claim to have paddled this section of river that offers numerous exciting rapids and beautiful scenery. The safety aspects of the race have been beefed up for this years event with a team of croc’s headed up by Hugh Raw sweeping the field and some of the more experienced Lembethe Canoe Club paddlers acting as river marshalls at the trickier rapids. There is only one compulsory portage around a tree block which will be marshalled. Seconds will be provided with a map to guide them to viewing points and the finish. If you are up for an unforgettable canoeing experience then enter the race at all the regular points at normal KNCU rates. Note: The river is technical and hence is A grade, however the rapids and waves are not huge like the Umko, expect them to be more like Duzi/Drak Challenge size.
