WP Waveski Surfing Association’s 2010 Open Competition was held on Saturday the 19th and Sunday 20th June at Jongensfontein, near Stilbaai. This beautiful venue is always a favourite with competitors and, to make this year’s event that extra bit special, the weather and surfing conditions were almost perfect as well.

The first day saw a gentle north-easterly breeze with temperatures hovering around a very comfortable 24° C, freshening to 15 - 20 km/h from the East on the second day, with the temperature dropping to around 20° C. Surfing conditions were classic, with 3 to 5 foot surf (Hawaiian scale) on the first day, moderating to 3 to 4 foot on the second day. The water temperature was a comfortable 17° C.

Contest director Pierre Slabber used a surf-off flow on day one to produce the top five contestants who would compete against provincial seeds Percy Louw, Schalk van Wyk, Pierre Slabber and Doug Copeland (Border) on day two.

Day one’s top five finishers were Chris Jones, Gerhardus van Zyl, JP Visser, Gerhard Wilke and Border’s Ruan Brand. Gerhardus van Zyl put in a concerted effort to beat older brother Adolph at their home break and make it to the seeded rounds on Sunday by finishing second to maestro Chris Jones at the end of day one.

Day two comprised three heats of three riders initially, progressing into a plate flow format. With lots of time available over the two-day event, it was possible to run this format rather than man on man knockout format.

Chris Jones was the highest point scorer on both days and deservedly took the WP Open title. Schalk van Wyk, a previous “Jongens Open” winner, gave it his best shot but was knocked out in the plate final by Doug Copeland and JP Visser who provided some very determined competition.

And the final results were:
